Carcinotron

In late 1950 a new form of microwave oscillator was designed. It had many similarities with the magnetron but it could be tuned over a wide frequency band by the application of a voltage. Initially as these devices were low power they were not considered to be of any military value, but when the possibilities were realised GEC carried out their own development work. The Carcinotron with a rapidly changing voltage waveform applied could sweep through a band so fast that it appeared to be radiating across the whole band at once. This made for an effective radar jammer.
